Competitor notes and start information

This popular orienteering and endurance event is divided into three events.

3 Hills Challenge - Chale Green Stores, Chale Green
7 Hills Challenge - Apple Tree Cafe, Afton Park, Newport Road, Freshwater
14 Hills Challenge - Lower Hyde Holiday Park, Landguard Road, Shanklin

All rides finish at Lower Hyde, Shanklin where there will be refreshments and entertainment.

Take on the challenge of an orienteering ride against the clock, as you pit your bike and stamina against the 3 hill, 7 hill or 14 hills challenge.

The ride is made up of a series of checkpoints that are placed across the island, which will be identified by an Ordnance Survey grid reference and orange tape will be placed at each location. The co-ordinates for these check points will be given to you on the day.

Once you have registered you will be issued with a number, a card with the control point locations and a SPORTident chip that you will need to use at each checkpoint. This will monitor your progress and log your time around the course.  If you don’t have your own chip you can hire one on the day for a deposit of £20 in the form of a cheque payable to the Isle of Wight Council.  Return the chip undamaged to us at the end of the event and you will receive your cheque back. Uncollected cheques will be destroyed.

There will be a map with the Control Points set out for you to plot your route at the start. At each control point, place your chip in the box. Any missed or wrongly punched checkpoints will mean disqualification from the event. Your recorded finish time will be when your Si-Card is inserted into the finish SPORTident box. It is NOT when you enter the grounds of the finish point

Please remember that this is an orienteering event, and NOT a race. Riders are invited to enter the ride on the understanding that it is for personal achievement only.

You will need to bring:

ü      Cycle Helmet (you cannot start without one on!)

Please adhere to the following rules, observing the Country Code and Highway Code, respecting other users of the countryside:

Do not leave any rubbish on the route - Please take it with you and dispose of at the finish point.

Please close all gates - Last year some were left open and some very angry landowners were worried their animals may escape. To ensure we can keep running this event please closes all gates behind you.

Do not race past other path users - There may be other people using the paths and bridleways you choose so please remember they have as much right to be there as you.

There have been reports of riders going very fast down some paths that lead out onto highways which could be very dangerous to other path and road users as well as the riders themselves. All riders are reminded that the event is not a race and is for personal achivement only. All participants agree to respect other users and keep to the cycling code whilst taking part in the event and we expect competitors to act responsibly at all times.
